# How to apply Terrastone Earth – what should I keep in mind?

## From the sample area to the finish: how to get great results with Terrastone Earth.

[**Terrastone Earth**](https://www.meinewand.com/en/clay-plaster) combines the mineral depth of Terrastone with the indoor-climate qualities of a fine clay plaster. Applied correctly, a single coat gives you a warm, matt wall with lively shading. Because the material behaves a little differently from Terrastone Original, there are a few points you should definitely keep in mind. The following steps guide you through the application.

### 1. Always create a sample area first

Before you start, always create a sufficiently large sample area on the actual substrate – using the same colour, tools, number of coats and the same finish. Even if time is short: only a sample area lets you reliably judge the colour effect and shading.

### 2. Check and prime the substrate

The substrate must be firm, sound, dry, clean and evenly absorbent. Suitable substrates include gypsum and lime-cement plasters, concrete, plasterboard, sound emulsion paint coatings and sound old clay plaster. Read more in [What should the surface be like for Terrastone?](https://support.meinewand.com/en/what-should-the-surface-be-like-for-terrastone?hsLang=en)

- **Normally absorbent substrates:** prime with Terrastone TerraBase 2 bonding primer.
- **Highly or unevenly absorbent substrates and old clay plaster:** first TerraBase 3G gel deep primer, then TerraBase 2 bonding primer or TerraBase 8 rapid bonding primer.

**Important on old clay plaster:** Do not apply the primer with a roller. Apply it generously with a brush in a cross pattern. Otherwise the roller tracks will later show through the surface as stripes.

### 3. Mix Terrastone Earth

First dissolve the pigment in about 5 litres of clean, cold water. Then sprinkle in the base material and mix thoroughly with a mixer. Add more water in small amounts until you reach a creamy, stable consistency – for 15 kg, a total of about 5 to 7 litres of water is a good guide value. Use the same amount of water for every bucket on one continuous surface. At 20 °C, use the mixed material within about 45 minutes.

### 4. Application: one or two coats

Terrastone Earth is applied in one or two coats. A **single coat without felt finishing** has proven most successful. If you want to apply two coats, the second coat can follow once the first has dried for about 1.5 to 2 hours (at approx. 20 °C). Always work wet into wet and finish continuous surfaces without interruption.

You can use the techniques of Terrastone Original: classic archaic (apply in crossing directions, then smooth), filled and finely smoothed, or lifted. The techniques are described in [How do I apply Terrastone? An overview.](https://support.meinewand.com/en/how-do-i-apply-terrastone?hsLang=en)

**Do not felt dark colours:** On dark and highly pigmented colours such as Anthrazit Dark 50 or Mumbai Dark 43, felt finishing causes strong, uneven shading. Apply these colours with a trowel or spatula only.

### 5. Let it dry and sand if required

Terrastone Earth sets after about one hour and hardens in approx. 4 to 10 days. Let the surface dry evenly without spot heating.

Sanding is **not required** – unsanded surfaces also look very good. If you want to sand, you can do so by hand or by machine; machine sanding no earlier than 2 to 3 working days after application. On dark colours, sanding can calm the shading a little. Then vacuum the surface very thoroughly, otherwise the sanding dust will show as a haze in the finish.

### 6. Optional finish

A finish is not necessary for normal decorative use. For additional protection, the following system has proven successful:

- **Base treatment:** terraSkin 16 pore filler, diluted 1:1 with water
- **Impregnation and protection:** terraSkin 9F (liquid stone soap) – the surface remains largely colour-neutral and looks slightly calmer.

Always test any finish on your sample area first, as it can change colour, sheen and feel. Further options are described in [What kind of surface protection is right for my Terrastone project?](https://support.meinewand.com/en/what-kind-of-surface-protection-is-right-for-my-terrastone-project?hsLang=en)

### Frequently asked questions

**How much Terrastone Earth do I need?**
On a smooth, well-prepared substrate, one 15 kg bucket covers about 12 m² in one coat (approx. 1.25 kg/m²) and about 8 to 9 m² in two coats (approx. 1.7 kg/m²). Rough or highly absorbent substrates increase consumption.

**Can I felt Terrastone Earth?**
Not on dark and highly pigmented colours – strong shading occurs there. On lighter colours, always try felting on the sample area first.

**Do I have to sand or seal the wall?**
No, both are optional. Sanding can calm the look; a terraSkin finish provides additional protection.

**Can I apply Terrastone Earth to old clay plaster?**
Yes, if the clay plaster is sound. Prime in two steps with TerraBase 3G and TerraBase 2 (or TerraBase 8) – using a brush in a cross pattern, not a roller.

**Where can I find the technical data sheet?**
