Terrastone as a Worktop in Kitchens and Offices

Production and installation of worktops made of Terrastone Floor Rustique on wood-based or plastic-coated substrates, including surface preparation, system build-up, sealing, and important usage notes.

Suitable Substrates

Suitable base materials include:

  • Wood-based panels such as MDF

  • Plastic-coated panels (e.g. kitchen worktop panels)

Important substrate notes

  • Raw wood-based panels must be sealed to prevent wood extractives from bleeding through.
Without proper sealing, discoloration of the Terrastone surface may occur later.

  • Solvent-based primers are recommended for sealing raw wood substrates.

  • Plastic-coated panels also require a bonding primer; in this case, water-based primers like can be used.

  • Joints in wood-based panels cannot be reinforced.
All joints must be structurally bonded (load-bearing). Simple gluing is not sufficient.

Terrastone System Build-Up

1. Priming

  • Material: Terra Base 4

  • Consumption: approx. 0.25 kg/m²

  • Coverage: 2.5 kg for approx. 6–16 m² (depending on absorbency)

2. Mixing Terrastone Rustique Floor

  • Materials:

    • Terrastone Rustique Floor (15 kg)

    • Liquid Rustique Floor (5 litres per 15 kg)

  • Up to 15% additional liquid may be added if a thinner consistency is required.

  • Tip: When working alone, mix only about one third of a bucket at a time.

Optional (first layer only):

  • Terra Base 12 Fiberglass

  • Dosage: 1 sachet (250 g) per 15 kg bucket
    → Increases resistance to micro-cracks

3. Application – First Layer

  • Apply with a Venetian trowel

  • Roughly smooth

  • Layer thickness: 1–2 mm

  • Drying time: approx. 5–6 hours at 20 °C

4. Intermediate Primer

  • Material: Terra Skin 16

  • Dilution: 1:2 with water

  • Application: 1 coat

  • Consumption: approx. 0.12 l/m²

  • Coverage: 1 litre for approx. 15 m²

5. Application – Second Layer

  • Apply with a Venetian trowel

  • Roughly smooth

  • Layer thickness: 1–2 mm

Smoothing technique (recommended):

  • Allow material to slightly set

  • Place smooth Styrodur boards on the surface

  • Once the material no longer sticks, smooth with the trowel

  • Move boards as needed

Total consumption (2 layers): approx. 5–6 kg/m²

Sealing / Care System

  1. Initial impregnation

    • Terra Skin 16, diluted 1:2 with water

    • Remove excess after 5 minutes

    • Coverage: approx. 20–22 m² per litre

    • Drying time: approx. 2 hours

  2. alternative oil treatment

    • Terra Skin 3N Natural Oil

    • For white Terrastone: Terra Skin 3NB

    • Remove excess after 20–30 minutes

    • Drying time: approx. 24 hours

  3. Wax finish

    • Terra Skin 10 Classic Wax

    • Apply with a plastic trowel and polish thoroughly

Important Final Notes ⚠️

  • Not suitable for sinks: standing water may cause long-term damage.

  • Not cut-resistant: durability is comparable to an oiled wooden worktop.

  • Always use cutting boards and protective pads.
