A brief introduction to metametry and its significance for design
What is Metamerism?
Metamerism refers to the phenomenon where two colors appear identical under one type of lighting, but look different under another. This is known as a metameric color effect.
Why is this important for wall paints and wallpapers?
Colors do not always appear the same – their appearance can change significantly depending on the lighting conditions. This is especially relevant when choosing wall paints, wallpapers, or fabrics. A color might look perfect in a showroom or on a screen, but once applied at home, it may look unexpectedly different.
For example, a shade that appears neutral in daylight may take on a yellowish or greenish tint under warm artificial light. This is not a defect, but a typical case of metamerism.
Metamerism within a room: Different surfaces, different effects
Even within the same room, a single color can appear different depending on how the light hits each surface.
For example:
-
A wall facing the window may appear significantly lighter than the side walls.
-
The ceiling may reflect the color differently than the walls.
-
Alcoves and shadowed areas may make the color appear cooler or darker.
These differences are natural and unavoidable – and should be considered when choosing colors or wallpapers.
More noticeable with high-end paints
Interestingly, metamerism tends to be more pronounced with premium-quality paints. This is because high-end paints usually contain a very high pigment concentration.
These fine pigments create enhanced light refraction on the surface, which not only intensifies the metameric effect, but also adds a distinct sense of depth to the color.
As a result, premium colors can subtly shift in character depending on the light – appearing more vibrant, refined, and dynamic.
Typical influencing factors:
-
Type of lighting: Daylight, LED, halogen, fluorescent light, etc.
-
Time of day and sun position
-
Surface texture: Matte, glossy, structured
-
Surrounding colors: Furniture, floors, decor
-
Room geometry and direction of light
-
Pigment density and quality of the paint
Our recommendation:
To ensure a color will look exactly as you envision it in your space, we recommend:
-
Ordering color or wallpaper samples
-
Observing the samples at different times of day and under various light sources
-
Testing the samples in the actual room and on different surfaces
This is the best way to experience the color in its real environment – without surprises.
Tip:
Even with the finest premium paints, light always influences perception. But that’s exactly what gives these colors their unique charm.
